Media Frenzy Follows
The 2013 Pumpkinmania! Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off & Contest!

Good afternoon, Pumpkinistas!

Now that the dust has settled from this year's weigh-off, I thought posting the articles and photos that appeared in The OC Register and The Irvine World News might be of interest.

In addition, here's the link to a video posted on YouTube by David Wolfberg, an award-winning, freelance documentary filmmaker and gardener/giant pumpkn grower, who was there to document the stunning moment when this year's champion was announced:

(I love the use of a hand-held camera to convey the spontaneity and zeitgeist of this year's weigh-off.)

There have been some random sightings of some of the footage captured by "Chris/Kris/Khris", the one-person film crew/driver from KABC TV. I haven't received any notice of it being available locally, (besides a call from KABC requesting the actual results of the weigh-off... Apparently this critical piece of information was somehow overlooked because of all of the excitement and pandemonium following the weigh-off.)

I hope you enjoy all of the coverage!

is Chris Dunn, Lomita, CA, 1,063 Pounds!

 Good afternoon, Pumpkinistas!

Last Sunday morning, was overcast, cool, with very little breeze during the set-up of this year's contest. The first 90 minutes of the event was filled with anxiety and dread. At 9:30 a.m. only one entry had arrived, and it was from Chris Dunn, one of this year's Pumpkinmania crew members. The outlook was grim.

Fortunately, entries began arriving by truck, trailer, and truck and trailer, and it was event on!

With Glenn Tanaka, owner of Tanaka Farms, this year's venue, at the (fork-lift) wheel, all of the entries were ready and in place before journalists from The Orange County Register, The Daily Titan of California State University, Fullerton, and KABC TV Channel 7 arrived.

Here's the link to The Daily Titan's article published October 31, 2013: http://issuu.com/dailytitan/docs/2013-31-10web?e=1298132/5442529#search

After the weigh-off concluded, and the prizes awarded in all categories, Ken Tanaka, hurled an 80 pound pumpkin from an elevated platform in honor of Chris Dunn and all of the pumpkin growers. It landed with a very meaty and satisfying "WHUMP!" and the crowd went wild!

Second place, $500.00, Jim Fredricks, Santee, CA, 1,030.50 pounds

A Strong Finish for the Grays!

Good afternoon, Pumpkinistas!

Here's the latest from the Grays:

"Hi Stuart, Sorry it took so long to send our update computer problems again . Pumpkin is still  hanging in there. Was glad to see your  pumpkin. At least the weather is better!  Until next  time, Mike and Susan"

Looks like a contender to me! With its bright orange color, the Grays may have to be considered for another category.

Monday, September 16, 2013

Stuart, here are a few photos of some large specimens in San Diego county. This is Vince's patch, totally out of control! Yes, that is his driveway that is now a pumpkin patch. You can see a large fruit in there!

This is his pumpkin, somewhere in the 900 lb range according to Vince. Grown off of the 980 Fredricks seed.

This photo is back home at the patch of Jim and Joshua. Rumor has it that the fruit is not as big as last year, but still a beautiful fruit with possibilities of being in the hunt at pumpkinmania. Rumor also has it that there are a few others in southern California with some bigguns out there. Let's hope they all stay healthy until October 27th.

PS. Joshua wants to know where his friend the Dark Prince has hidden?
